About the Runes

Excerpts from the book
The Viking Runes: A Personal Experience
by Cheryl Harleston

I peered down below, took the Runes up,
Shrieking took them, then fell back again.
Well-being I won, and wisdom too.
I grew and took joy in my growth:
From a word to a word I was led to a word,
from a deed to another deed.

The Poetic Edda (ca. A.D.1200)

Rune = From the Gothic "runa", something secret, a mystery.

Runic symbols are so ancient that it is next to impossible to establish their exact origin. They are believed to have evolved from ancient Greek, Etruscan and Roman forms of writing, at a time when magic was part of everyday life. They had a clear ritualistic function, and were used as sacred instruments for protection and divination.

Finding answers

Unlike other oracles such as the Tarot or the I Ching, the Viking Runes are amazingly easy to use —you don't have to read between lines, guess their meanings, or learn complicated rituals or techniques. In fact, there are no set rules concerning their use and handling, as long as they are treated with respect.

Through their straight-forward answers, the Runes give us the clues we need to become clear, make decisions, or choose the most appropriate action in any given situation. The information is received first through the reading itself, then through our own physical, mental and emotional centers.

Readings

There are different ways to read the Runes, but the key will always be the receptivity to your own intuition. We therefore suggest that you take a few moments to become calm and centered before any reading.

Once you have established a connection with your intuition in the here and now, listen to it, trust it, and allow yourself to be guided by it. The rest will come on its own.

Our free online reading is based on the Single Rune Spread, the simplest but by no means the least important. Quite often the answer from a single Rune is more than enough to give us the clarity we need!
